William Wayne Taylor
William (Bill) Wayne Taylor, 77, of New Bern, formerly of Bear Grass, passed away on Monday, July 15. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Linda Taylor; his children, Melanie King (Jason) and Billy Taylor (Angela); grandchildren Gabriel and Ella King; and brother Steve Taylor (Vicky). He was predeceased by his parents, William and Irene Taylor, and sister, Judy Taylor. He served in the U.S.M.C. and was a Vietnam Veteran. A memorial service will be held at Centenary United Methodist Church, 309 New Street, New Bern, on Saturday, July 20, at 11 a.m. A reception will follow in the church’s fellowship hall. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Craven Community College Foundation (https://cravencc.edu/foundation) or the Salvation Army of New Bern (https://southernusa.salvationarmy.org/new-bern/). Willis Roswell Stevens, Jr.
Willis Roswell Stevens Jr., 87, of New Bern, passed away on Friday, June 28, 2024. He was born February 14, 1937, to Willis Roswell Stevens and Elma Hensley Stevens. He graduated from Lumberton High School in 1955. He attended High Point College from 1955 to 1959, Pfeiffer College from 1956 to 1957, and East Carolina University from 1963 to 1966, earning a BS in Business Administration. Willis served in the Navy from 1959 to 1963 as a musician. After retiring from the Navy, he moved to New Bern to join his parents, where his father was a Centenary United Methodist Church minister. He worked at Cherry Point for 25 years and retired as head of Labor and Employee Relations in 1993. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Carolyn G. Stevens; daughters, Cindy Finley (Bill) and Nancy Cooper (Brent); brother, Frank Stevens (Joy) and sister, Betty Anne Jordan; 10 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, August 3, at Christ Episcopal Church, with burial in the churchyard and a reception in the Parish House. In lieu of flowers please send donations to the music fund at Christ Episcopal Church—arrangements by Cotten Funeral Home & Crematory.

New Bern residents can expect to see a higher electric bill this month. Starting July 1, the city is enacting a 6% increase in electric rates that will continue for one year. The New Bern Board of Aldermen approved the increase at its June 25 meeting, citing a $3 million deficit in electric operations. City Manager Foster Hughes attributed the deficit to inflation, network expansion, and rate cuts from 2015, 2016, and 2017.
