New Bern residents can expect to see a higher electric bill this month. Starting July 1, the city is enacting a 6% increase in electric rates that will continue for one year. The New Bern Board of Aldermen approved the increase at its June 25 meeting, citing a $3 million deficit in electric operations. City Manager Foster Hughes attributed the deficit to inflation, network expansion, and rate cuts from 2015, 2016, and 2017.

Eleanor “Ellie” Morton Lewis, 90, went home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Sunday, July 14, 2024 at her home with her family by her side. She was born June 20, 1934 in Fredericksburg, Va. a daughter of the late Jonah and Laura Strother Sullivan. A funeral service will be held Thursday, July 18, at 2 p.m. at Freedom Way Baptist Church with Pastors Travis Moots and Steve Petty officiating. Burial will follow at the Morton Family Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church. Ellie was a loved and respected day care teacher loving and helping raise and nurture many children in the Swansboro area. She loved her Lord and loved worshipping Him with her family and friends. She is survived by her children, George Barth (Betty Lou) of Del., Bettie Weaver (John Green) of Hubert, Sheila Fulcher (Dewayne Rivenbark) of Hubert, Sherry Cuellar (Max) of Swansboro, and Emmett H. Morton, Jr. (Pam) of Swansboro; grandchildren, Joey, Brittany, Bridgett, and Brandi; great-grandchildren, Devin, Speirs, Wyatt, Titus, Presley, Ruby, Olivia, and Taylar Shay; and siblings, James Sullivan of Md, Robert Sullivan of N.C., Eva Miller of Md., and Stella Morrison of Tenn. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Emmett H. Morton, Sr. and Garland Lewis; and siblings, Reginal Sullivan, Arlene Haney, Gladys Williams and Louis Peterson. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Freedom Way Baptist Church, Remodeling Fund, 207 Queens Rd., Hubert, N.C., 28539. Online condolences may be shared at jonesfh.org. Carteret County schools launch Stuff the Bus to aid families with school supplies
Carteret County schools are hosting the Stuff the Bus event in order to get basic school supplies to families in need during the first week of August. From August 2-4, both Walmart and Staples in Morehead City will be collecting supplies from 8:00 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday and Saturday while being open 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday.
