MARINETTE — After starting the season undefeated, the Marinette girls soccer team came crashing down to Earth with consecutive losses to end the week.

Marinette’s bad luck began Thursday at Freedom, where the Marines suffered the first loss of the year at the hands of the Irish 7-3 in North Eastern Conference play.

Bad vibes followed the Marines into Friday’s non-conference matchup against Seymour, as the Thunder handed Marinette a 6-1 defeat amid blustery and frigid conditions.

With winds blowing so heavily that the sound of flags whipping in the air resembled the rat-a-tat of a machine gun, Seymour (3-2-1) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first half behind goals from Jaelyn Wenninger and Hannah Daugherty.

Chloe Seymour pumped in the lone goal for Marinette with 2:56 remaining in the half, which forced the Thunder to settle for a 2-1 edge at halftime.

Marinette (0-1-1 NEC, 2-2-1 overall) couldn’t trim its deficit down any further in the second half, as the Thunder fired off three goals in the first 10 minutes to take a 5-1 lead before Haylee Rusch booted in one final insurance score with 6:03 left to play.

Friday’s outcome was eerily similar to Thursday’s contest against Freedom, with the Marines hanging tight in the first half before being held off the scoreboard in the second.

Marinette ambushed Freedom with a 2-0 lead but quickly ran out of steam, as The Irish (1-0-1 NEC, 3-1-1 overall) entered halftime nursing a 4-3 advantage.

Freedom sealed the Marines’ fate with three unanswered goals in the second half to secure the win.

Sierra Schreiner collected a hat-trick against the Irish, tallying all three of Marinette’s goals off assists from Seymour, Josie Smerchek and Kylie Kunick.
