    Marine girls shut out Truckers for season's first win

    MARINETTE — The Marinette High School softball team picked up its first win of the season in emphatic fashion, defeating Clintonville in a North Eastern Conference contest by a score of 12-0 on Friday.

    Senior pitcher Wynn Erdman set the tone by striking out the side in the top of the first inning.

    The Marines got on the board in the second inning when Lauren Pelon singled, stole second and eventually scored on a passed ball.

    Marinette put its foot down in the third inning, scoring eight runs on seven hits and two errors while sending 14 hitters to the plate.

    Giana Davis started the rally with a single and a stolen base.

    All nine hitters reached base safely at least once in the inning, while Davis, Barrett Cole, Destiny Walker, Erdman, Kaya Bodam, Lauren Pelon and Peyton VanPool all had hits.

    In her second at bat of the frame, Davis reached on a fielder’s choice and later scored on a single from Walker to push the score to 9-0.

    The Marines tacked on in the fourth inning.

    VanPool started a two-out rally with a base hit. Georgieanna Grandaw followed with an RBI double and then scored on a single from Davis.

    Cole then drove Davis in with a base hit to cap the scoring at 12-0.

    Meanwhile, Erdman was in control in the circle. She allowed only four hits and two hit batters while walking none and striking out eight.

    Cole went 2-for-3 out of the leadoff spot for the Marines. She reached base three times and drove in three.

    The Marines outhit the Truckers 13-4 while Cole, Walker (2-2), Davis (2-3), Pelon (2-3) and VanPool (2-3) all enjoyed multi-hit games.

    Marinette improved to 1-5 on the season and 1-5 in NEC play. Clintonville fell to 1-9 overall and 0-6 in conference play.

    Marinette: The Marines will host Waupaca in an NEC game today (Monday). That contest is scheduled for a 4:30 p.m. first pitch.
