Marinette Legion notches first win against Green Bay

    2024-06-16

GREEN BAY — The Marinette Legion baseball team enjoyed a Saturday split with Green Bay Preble on Saturday.

Post 39 dropped game one by way of a 4-2 decision before regrouping to pummel Green Bay 15-1 in the nightcap.

Carson Blom scored on a wild pitch to give Preble a quick lead in the bottom of the first inning before an RBI-double off the bat of Aiden Hoffman made it a 2-0 contest.

Kolton Goldsmith led off the top of the third with a double for Marinette before coming around to score on an RBI-single by Logan Marvin.

An error in the top of the fifth allowed JJ Brand to score and tie matters up at 2-2 before an error allowed Blom to collect his second run of the afternoon and nudge Green Bay ahead by one.

Green Bay tacked on an insurance run in its half of the sixth after Justin Smith scored on a wild pitch.

Marvin worked a two-out walk to give Post 39 a base runner in the top of the seventh but Marinette’s rally petered out after Weston Hanson flew out to second base to end game one.

Game two began with Chase MacGregor getting on base with an error before coming around to score on an RBI-single by Logan Kurth, putting Marinette on top 1-0.

Ribbies from Kurth and Ethan Doubek helped Post 39 seize a 5-0 cushion in the top of the second before Logan Devillas plated Blom with an RBI-double to make it a four-run affair.

Post 39 erupted for seven runs in the top of the third to make it a 12-1 score before MacGregor put the finishing touches on the blowout with a two-run home run in the top of the fourth.

Kruse picked up the win on the mound, striking out nine and walking three while giving up six hits and an earned run through five innings of work.

Kurth was the losing pitcher in game one after allowing three runs, none of which were earned, issuing four free passes to go with 12 punchouts.

Marinette is now 1-3 through the first week of the season.
