Man charged in double fatality crash in Grover

MARINETTE — A Pembine man has been charged with two counts of homicide by negligent operation of a vehicle in connection with a June 2 crash in the Town of Grover that caused the death of two women.

Scott Mathis, 46, has been charged, according to a press release from Marinette County District Attorney DeShea Morrow.

According to the Criminal Complaint issued by the District Attorney’s Office, on June 2, multiple officers from different law enforcement agencies responded to a two-vehicle crash at the intersection of County Trunk B and County Trunk W in the Town of Grover. Witnesses described that an SUV traveling southbound on County Trunk W failed to stop at the stop sign at the intersection and struck a car traveling eastbound on County Trunk B.

The two women in the car — driver Elysia Kust, 44, Coleman, and her mother, Mary Kust, 73, Coleman — appeared to be deceased and were later pronounced dead. The driver of the SUV was identified as Mathis. An examination of his cell phone showed phone activity immediately before the crash, according to the complaint.

Mathis will appear in court July 22 for an initial appearance. Assistant District Attorney Kathryn Heineck is handling this case for the state.

Morrow states that the charges against Mathis are merely allegations, and he is presumed innocent of all charges until and unless proven guilty.
