Marinette walks off Bay Port for Regional tourney win

GREEN BAY — Weston Hanson came through in crunch time as the Marinette Legion baseball team walked off Bay Port 3-2 on day two of the AAA Regional tournament on Wednesday.

Marinette entered the bottom of the seventh inning having already watched its early lead evaporate in the top of the fourth, after an error allowed Logan Brusewitz to score and put Bay Port ahead 2-1.

Having already dropped their opening game to De Pere on Tuesday, Post 39 needed a little late inning magic in order to avoid being bounced from the double-elimination bracket.

The bottom of Marinette’s order proved up to the challenge, as JJ Brand led off the frame with a double before Braeden Huston reached base on an error.

Post 39’s lineup flipped to the top of the order, where Bay Port pitcher Austin Vandeyacht doinked Chase MacGregor to load the bases for Hanson with only one out.

Already 2-for-2 at the plate, Hanson delivered the most impactful swing of the game, blasting a double to the outfield fence to bring home Brand and Houston and cap off a thrilling rally by Post 39.

Landon Corwin had an RBI-single for Post 39 in the bottom of the first inning.

Wednesday’s victory ensured Marinette a showdown with De Pere’s second Legion squad on Thursday at 2:30 p.m., where a victory would push Post 39 into the semifinals, where a rematch against the other De Pere team would await.

Results of Thursday’s games were unavailable at press time.

Tuesday’s contest against De Pere saw Marinette fighting from behind from the first inning after Milo Upton drove in a pair of runs with a single.

Charlie Van Rens tacked on an RBI-single in the top of the fourth before a two-run double by Jason Lehman helped De Pere seize an 8-0 advantage.

Marinette got off the schneid in the bottom of the fifth after an RBI-groundout from Hanson allowed Maverick Williamson to score.

However, Post 39 was largely held off the basepaths down the stretch, with a walk by Justin Kruse in the sixth inning the only base runner Marinette was able to muster.

Landon Raygo chipped in an RBI-double in De Pere’s half of the sixth for the final run of the game.
