GRANT COUNTY, Ind. — Officials with the Indiana State Police are investigating after a man was killed by a Marion police officer early Monday morning during a warrant arrest that allegedly turned into a struggle.

According to a post on social media by Steven Glass with the Indiana State Police, officials are investigating an officer-involved shooting in the 2100 block of W. 8th St. in Marion.

“There is no ongoing threat to the public,” the post read.

Officials with the Indiana State Police said that two officers were involved in the shooting and a man has been pronounced dead. Neither of the officers have injuries. Detectives are currently broadening the area as officials search for evidence.

Family on the scene identified the person who died as 39-year-old Michael Guy.

Officials with the Indiana State Police said that there will be body camera footage of the incident that will be reviewed as part of the investigation.

During a Monday afternoon news conference, Glass said the deadly shooting was the result of an arrest attempt. Marion police were reportedly attempting to arrest Guy at a residence on W. 8th Street on an outstanding warrant related to invasion of privacy. This arrest attempt occurred at roughly 5:30 a.m. on Monday.

Glass said that a woman was reportedly at the home at the time and Guy was “an unwanted guest” in the home. A family member of Guy reportedly knew about his warrant and knew that Guy was in the home. The family member reportedly called into dispatch with this information.

ISP said it was believed the woman inside the residence also had a protective order against Guy.

Glass said that Guy was located inside the home. Two officers with the Marion Police Department attempted to place Guy under arrest. During that time, Glass said that Guy was uncooperative and there was a physical altercation.

During the altercation, Glass said that Guy was able to disarm one of the officers by ripping the holster and firearm off of the officer’s belt. One of the officers reportedly used a Taser against Guy, but officials said that was ineffective.

After the Taser was ineffective, one shot was fired by an officer at Guy and struck him. Glass said life-saving measures were conducted, but Guy was later pronounced dead.

Scott Hunt, the prosecutor in Grant County, said that this continues to be an active investigation. All the information from the investigation will be forwarded to the prosecutor’s office and the office will then make a determination.

Officials said this is the first officer-involved shooting in Marion this year. Marion Mayor Ronald Morrell Jr. said that his prayers go out to those who were involved in the incident.

“This is very heavy for our community.” Morrell Jr. said.

On Monday evening, Marion police shared the bodycam footage on their Facebook page. In the bodycam footage, as Guy fights with police and reportedly disarms one of the officers, Guy can be heard saying “I’ll kill your a**,” “I’m about to pull it on your a**,” and “I got something for you.”

The Taser is heard being deployed on Guy as police scream at him to “let it go” and “put it down.” Multiple shots are then fired and Guy is seen lying motionless.
