GRANT COUNTY, Ind. — Michael Guy was someplace he shouldn’t have been.

Facing a September trial for rape of a minor and child molesting, the 39-year-old Marion man was the subject of a protective order filed by his estranged wife.

She told police that late last month Guy had pulled up outside her home in the 2100 block of West 8th Street and began yelling at her in violation of that order.

That alleged violation was enough for a judge to sign an arrest warrant last week which brought two Marion police officers to the woman’s home on Monday morning.

The woman was locked out of the house and helped police break back in before they discovered Guy behind a closed bedroom door.

ISP: 1 shot, killed by Marion officer during warrant arrest struggle

“The information that the Marion city police officers had obtained is that there was a male subject in the residence who had the active arrest warrant for invasion of privacy and then learned about the protection order on that subject at that residence,” said Indiana State Police Sergeant Steven Glass.

“They attempted to place him into custody however Mr. Guy was uncooperative and began a struggle in an altercation with city officers. During that struggle, Mr. Guy was able to disarm one of the city officers by ripping off the duty holster which contained the handgun off of his duty belt. One of the city officers then used his department-issued taser which proved to be ineffective. At that time at least one shot was fired by the Marion city police officer striking Mr. Guy.”

The officers immediately began performing life-saving measures on Guy but to no avail.

ISP is handling the investigation which will include a review of body-worn camera video.

The officer who fired the service weapon is on administrative duty.

Outside of the house where the shooting occurred, Guy’s family gathered throughout the day as Vera Cole remembered her son as a loving companion on family road trips to Indiana area amusement parks.

The Mayor of Marion asked for the community to await the results of the State Police investigation.

”That is why we are partnering with the Indiana State Police to be sure that there is a thorough external investigation because we want to hold everyone accountable and make sure we’re doing what’s right by our citizens and by our officers,” said Mayor Ronald Morrell, Jr.
