MARION, IND. –State Police say they have more information about the shooting death of a man by a Marion Police officer Monday morning.

The investigation got started at about 5:30 am when officers with the Marion Police Department responded to 2106 W. 8th street. They were told there was a man inside who had an active arrest warrant for invasion of privacy.

State Police Sergeant Steven Glass says that man has been identified as 39-year-old Michael Martel Guy and he had an active protection order against him. When police tried to get Guy into custody for the warrant, Glass says he did not cooperate which led to a struggle.

“During that struggle, Mr. Guy was able to disarm one of the city officers by ripping off the duty holster which contained his handgun off of his duty belt,” said Glass in a Monday morning news conference.

One of the officers used a taser, but it was not effective.

“So at that time at least one shot was fired by a Marion Police Officer striking Mr. Guy. Despite life saving measures, Guy succumbed to those injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene,” Glass continued.

No officers were injured. The Marion Police officer who fired the gun was placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation, which is standard procedure in situations like this.

The findings of the investigation will be turned over to the Grant County Prosecutor’s Office for review.
