MARLBOROUGH A local man appeared to be speeding on Wednesday when he lost control of his car and crashed into a garage on Preston Street, setting both his car and the garage on fire, authorities allege.

The 19-year-old man, who has not been identified, was transported to UMass-Memorial Medical Center in Worcester after the 1:20 p.m. crash, Police Lt. Scott Carey said.

    No one else was injured.

The motorist was traveling on Russell Street when he lost control and crashed into the garage at 103 Preston St., which is at the corner of Russell Street.

"It (the car) was coming up the hill on Russell Street at a high rate of speed and it caused him to lose control and crashed into the garage," Carey said. "The car caught fire, which caused the garage to catch fire."

The motorist suffered from smoke inhalation and burns and was taken to the hospital for treatment of injuries not believed to be life-threatening.

The vehicle, a Jeep Grand Cherokee, is totaled, and the garage sustained significant damage, according to Carey.

The driver will be cited for speeding, driving to endanger and for a marked-lanes violation, the lieutenant added.
