Iowa Zoo Facing Cruelty Allegations After the Death of a Shark
An Iowa aquarium is facing calls to shut down after it euthanized a shark that bit an employee this week. The Des Moines Register reports that Blue Zoo, a for-profit aquarium, opened in May in the Villages at Jordan Creek Town Center. The euthanized shark is reportedly the second animal to die at the facility since it opened, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The Register reports that the Humane Society of the United States is calling for an investigation and for Blue Zoo to close.
West Nile Has Been Found in Iowa Mosquitoes
The good news is that at the time of writing, no humans in Iowa have yet tested positive for the West Nile virus. Mosquitos on the other hand have been found containing the virus in central Iowa. According to KCRG, mosquitoes were trapped at a park in West Ames sometime in mid-July. The park where these mosquitoes were found is sprayed or fogged every Wednesday night. Some of these mosquitoes contained the West Nile virus.

Fire damages Red Oak residence
(Red Oak) -- Red Oak's firefighters battled a house fire Thursday morning. Red Oak's fire department was dispatched to 305 South 6th Street shortly after 8 a.m. following a report of a house filling with smoke. Fire Chief John Bruce says the house's lone occupant escaped without injury. Firefighters entering the residence found a large amount of smoke coming from the basement area. Bruce says a power cord located in the basement ignited, causing a fire extending to adjoining floor joists, causing minimal damage.
Shenandoah couple arrested Thursday on felony Neglect/abandonment of a dependent person charges
(Sidney, Iowa) – Fremont County Sheriff Kevin Aistrope, Thursday night, two people were taken into custody on felony charges of Neglect or Abandonment of a Dependent Person, and Aggravated Misdemeanor charges of Child Endangerment. 26-year-old Dustin Carl Lee Perry, and 26-year-old Lindsey Barbara Marie Hamilton, both of Shenandoah, were being held without bond in the Fremont County Jail, pending an initial appearance before a Magistrate Judge. Additional charges are pending.
Allbaugh resigns from Clarinda council
(Clarinda) -- One of the newer faces to Clarinda government is stepping down from the city council. Councilman Mike Allbaugh announced his resignation from the Clarinda City Council during Wednesday evening's regular meeting. One of the fresher faces on the council, Allbaugh was elected as a write-in candidate during last November's election. Due to personal changes, Allbaugh said Wednesday would be his final meeting as a council member.
