WellSpan Health, a healthcare provider in Pennsylvania and Maryland, has been awarded the American Hospital Association (AHA) Quest for Quality prize for leadership and innovation in quality performance improvement. According to the AHA, WellSpan’s safety infrastructure was particularly impressive, with daily huddles used to escalate any potential issues across the organization to ensure decisions regarding patient care could be made quickly and efficiently. The healthcare provider also aimed to create a sense of psychological safety within the organization, so that all team members, including frontline care providers, could feel empowered to share their perspectives and quickly address any safety issues that may arise. This approach led to a significant decrease in serious safety events during care, as well as a significant increase in team members who felt empowered to stop the line and report patient safety events.

Montgomery Co. passes bill to enforce tenant safety regulations after deadly Silver Spring apartment fire
The measure was prompted by the fire at the Arrive Silver Spring apartment complex that took the life of 25-year-old Melanie Diaz last year. “We were working with members of the public and listening to their stories and what they went through during that event, and realized there was so much we could do here at the county (level) to make sure that there was better preparation for emergencies and better information sharing,” said Montgomery County Council Vice President Kate Stewart, who sponsored the legislation.
Baltimore police commissioner speaks on case of officers using excessive force
Baltimore Police Commissioner Richard Worley on Thursday spoke on a case regarding a man who accused city officers of using excessive force during an arrest. The arrest happened in the 1900 block of East Oliver Street in May, in which body-worn camera video showed police force Jaemaun Joyner to the ground in handcuffs as they were searching for a robbery suspect. Joyner’s attorneys allege excessive force because of the takedown and the way officers pinned him to the sidewalk.
