Kendall County Fair continues tradition of 4-H, families and food
The Kendall County Fair will have a four-day run next week, with three days of 4-H programs, music, grandstand events and food. While the two-year long COVID-19 pandemic continues to impact the availability of carnival rides, organizers promise plenty of attractions and traditional county fair events. The fairgrounds, located at 10826 Illinois Route 71 in Yorkville, open Thursday, with free admission from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and $5 admission from 5 p.m. until closing. WIU Union President Responds to Announcement of Future Layoffs
“This new administration needs to strengthen and guide the university forward instead of gutting the quality of education.”. during the Western Illinois University (WIU) Faculty Senate meeting, Interim President Kristi Mindrup announced that the university intends to layoff an undetermined number of contingent and tenure/tenure track faculty and academic support professionals. Details will not be available until after a scheduled emergency Board of Trustees meeting on August 6. The layoffs will be in addition to the 35 contingent faculty who were laid off in June.

Coast Guard searching for at least 1 missing person after boat sinks near 31st Street Harbor
A water search is underway after a boat capsized in Lake Michigan on Chicago's South Side.The U.S. Coast Guard said they received calls about a 25-foot double-decker pleasure yacht capsizing and then sinking near the 31st Street Harbor. Chicago police said it happened around 7:30 p.m.The Coast Guard said 16 people were on the boat at the time of the incident. It was not immediately clear how many of them went into the water, but as of 9 p.m., Chicago police and the Coast Guard said at least one person, an adult male, was still unaccounted for.Three people, a man and two women, were taken to a local hospital for treatment after the incident, all in good condition, police said.A witness said he saw the boat speeding in the water before flipping over, and then he heard screams for help.A group called Boat Safe Chicago captured drone video of the wreckage just moments after the crash.The search for the missing person, or people, is ongoing by Chicago police with assistance from a helicopter in the air.
