Marshall’s 2024 track & field season carried on with some valuable competition on Friday, May 3. The Cardinals made the short trip to Deerfield High School for the Deerfield Classic, which annually brings in plenty of familiar faces.

The Cardinals got an up-close look at five teams in their Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association (WIAA) regional grouping in host Deerfield, Cambridge, Abundant Life Christian, Faith Christian, Johnson Creek, and Madison Country Day. Capitol Conference rivals Sugar River, Wisconsin Heights, Columbus, and Lake Mills were also among the 18-team field.

Marshall held its own against the stiff competition. The boys finished fifth overall with a team score of 58.5 while the girls placed eighth at 36. Sugar River won the meet for the boys with a score of 87, followed by Columbus with 74 and Deerfield at 66. The host Demons were champions for the girls at 109 team points, followed by Shiocton with 70 and Columbus at 66.

The Cardinals had a pair of first place finishers, both coming from the boys’ field portion of the event. Junior Brady Stensven won the triple jump with a distance of 42’9.5”. His junior teammate, Daniel Nickel, turned in a jump of 39’5” for third in the event. Nickel would also put up a leap of six feet flat to win the high jump.

On the track, Marshall got a big boost from junior Max Timpel. He sped his way to a time of 53.58 seconds for third in the 400 meter run and also placed fourth in the 100 meter dash with a time of 11.48 seconds.

The high-end finishes didn’t end there. Senior Jaxon Hornby also turned in a fourth place finish in the 1,600 meter run with his time of 4:40.30. Fellow senior Caden Norquay nabbed fifth in the 300 meter hurdles with a time of 43.40 seconds. The boys’ best effort in the relays came courtesy of the 4x100 meter team. Senior Brayden Klubertanz, juniors Fernando Campos and Jose Ayala-Santacruz, and sophomore Carter Pettit burned a time of 46.34 seconds for fourth place.

As for the girls, Marshall hung its hat on a strong day in the field. Their highest finish came from junior Alexanda Moreth, who finished as runner-up in the discus with a throw of 106’8”. Senior teammate Paige Billig finished right behind her in third with a toss of 97’10”. Billig would also nab sixth place in the shot put with a throw of 30’6.5”.

Elsewhere in the field, senior Lizet Lopez-Montes took fourth in the pole vault at eight feet flat. Senior teammate Wynn Held also tied for seventh at seven and a half feet. Freshman Tori Justmann also added a fifth place finish in the high jump with a height of 4’4”.

Justmann was also responsible for the girls’ best finish on the track. She placed sixth in the 3,200 meter run with her time of 12:44.23. Sophomore Keira Hellenbrand also placed eighth in the 400 meter run with a time of 1:07.74. The Cardinals’ best relay result came in the 4x200 meter as Hellenbrand, Held, Lopez-Montes, and senior Sydney Denniston teamed up to finish sixth with a time of 1:56.53.

Friday’s action set the stage for Marshall’s grand event of the season. The Cardinals will host their annual Dana Waddell Invitational on Wednesday, May 8. This will be just the start of a busy week for Marshall as it will also compete in the Wisconsin Dells Invitational on Friday, May 10. The Capitol Conference meet is up to follow that, hosted by Lake Mills on Tuesday, May 14.
