Missing father, daughter found safe at Jonathan Dickinson State Park

A 40-year-old father and his 12-year-old daughter are safe after getting lost in Jonathan Dickinson State Park while hiking.

Fire Rescue said they received a call at about noon Friday that the father and daughter went to the park to camp Thursday but got lost.

Cory Pippin with Martin County Fire Rescue said the father called rangers saying they were lost and weren't feeling well before the man's phone died.

Pippin said park rangers found the family at about 1:30 p.m. about 2 miles into the park and rescued them.

"They're lucky, I mean we had a lot of crews out there, a lot of agencies out there trying to find these hikers because it's such a dangerous situation when you talk about the heat and lack of shade in the park," Pippin said. "It's good we found them when we did. This could have ended much worse."

Pippin said the family was checked out by EMS crews at the scene but declined any further medical attention

Two helicopters were also used in the search.
