MARTINS FERRY, Ohio (WTRF) — Some people might not know that the men and women who helped shape our country are buried right here in the Ohio Valley.

The Sons of the American Revolution held a memorial service today at Walnut Grove Cemetery in Martins Ferry to honor the Revolutionary War heroes who are buried there.

During the ceremony, they revealed a new sign just in front of Betty Zane’s statue with a list of the soldiers that are buried in the cemetery.

The sign is the first of dozens that they plan to install throughout eastern Ohio, where Revolutionary War veterans are buried.

One of the main goals of the SAR is to preserve history and educate the public about the events that took place throughout the region.

We want to honor these patriots, these gentlemen and these women, so that they understand the sacrifices that were made for our freedom that we enjoy today.”

That is our effort to refresh everyone’s memory of history. And hopefully, when people come to this cemetery, they’ll reverend this cemetery and honor these veterans and these people that helped establish this country.”

Larry Perkins | Secretary, Founding President, SAR Ebenezer Zane Chapter

The Sons of the American Revolution would like to thank the City of Martins Ferry for allowing them to continue preserving history within the town.
