Cape Cod bridge replacement project awarded nearly $1B investment grant

The U.S. Department of Transportation recently awarded the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) a nearly $1 billion Bridge Investment Program grant for the replacement of the Cape Cod bridges.

This brings the total federal funding for the project to nearly $1.72 billion. It also has received $700 million in state funding.

The project will replace two bridges, address traffic issues, and improve safety. The project is in the environmental review and permitting phase.

“This grant award gives us the momentum we need to move ahead with the project to replace the Sagamore Bridge over the Cape Cod Canal and to lay the groundwork to replace the Bourne Bridge,” state Transportation Secretary Monica Tibbits-Nutt said. “With this additional funding, we can move forward in bringing these transportation improvement projects to life, which will have an impact on generations to come.”

The project also will provide bicycle and pedestrian connections to the larger Cape Cod multimodal transit network. Work expected to begin next year includes a shared use path for pedestrians and bicycles on 1.5 miles of Route 6 in Bourne, and a paved path running from Monument Neck Road to the existing Cape Cod Canal Bike Path.
