Police are searching for answers after a dog was left abandoned tied to a street pole in Maywood on Monday evening, said Maywood police Chief Terence Kenny.

Officers responded to a report of a stranded dog at the intersection of Golf Avenue and Steward Street at about 7:20 p.m. on Monday, officials said.

Witnesses say they saw the suspect tying the pit bull to the street sign and then leaving the area in a black Acura sedan, according to the Maywood Police Department.

Officers found the neglected dog with a large tumor protruding from its mouth. Bergen County Animal Control took custody of the pit bull and the dog was taken to the Bergen County Animal Shelter.

Police chief Kenny said the dog has a chip that is 10 years old, but officials are unsure if it traces back to the most recent owner. The chip in the dog came back out of New York City, said Kenny.
