NORTH SIOUX CITY, S.D. (KCAU) — McCook residents are eager to share their stories after the flooding destroyed their homes and nearly everything they had.

Residents say the water came in so fast and within minutes they had more than a foot of water at their doorstep.

How to help flooding victims in Siouxland

The people said they did not have flood insurance after they were told it was dropped by FEMA because they no longer lived in a flood plain, even though the plan was to send the river water to McCook Lake. Residents are still waiting for answers and hope to learn more soon.

Darcey Spates, a resident of North Sioux City said, “nobody, nobody warned us, nothing, I mean. and the things is I hear that they knew that that’s where it was going to go. They knew that’s where they were sending it. But it’s the fact that we literally had to run for our lives when someone somewhere knew that this was going to happen. And they didn’t tell any of us.”

Residents will continue to recover and learn more about the shocking flood for weeks to come.
