South Carolina Students Return to Phone-Free Classrooms

Several South Carolina School districts, York, Clover, and Chester counties head back to the classrooms next week with others following shortly. This year many of the students will be doing so without their cell phones. A new state law taking effect this year bans children in K through 12th grade from using their mobile phones in the classroom in South Carolina’s public schools. Schools that are found to be out of compliance with the new law risk the loss of public funding.

Some parents have objected to the policy citing the need to reach their kids in the event of an emergency. State Superintendent Ellen Weaver had this to say about those concerns:

While we certainly don’t want to ever deny a parent access to their child, at the same time, I think we have to balance these very real safety and instructional concerns that cellphones create,

Weaver’s comments came at a board meeting last month.

Approximately 77% of public schools nationwide have cell phone bans in some form.
