Letter: Professional men in positions of power
Regarding former federal judge Joshua Kindred and former Alaska Attorney General Kevin Clarkson: Why are professional men in positions of power permitted to intimidate and sexually pursue women, and engage in attendant misconduct, in the course of their professional responsibilities — until they are somehow caught?. That is called...
Letter: Sauce for the goose
Some Democrats are rightfully questioning Joe Biden’s cognitive abilities, and are requesting he drop out of the presidential race. Where are the Republicans who should be asking their candidate to step down as well? After all, Trump is a liar, cheat, self-proclaimed abuser of women and a convicted felon. Do they really want this man to be our president?
Letter: School start time problems
I am writing to you regarding the school start change times. My high schooler will get less sleep, not more. He is part of a swim team that will only be able to practice in the mornings before school. After school, the younger kids will swim, then the lesson program begins. Many of the teenagers teach the younger kids in this program and will need to stick around two hours before working, then straggle home after it ends at 6:30 p.m. The day always ended at 6:30, just after they already practiced.
Letter: A friendly suggestion
Congratulations to Mayor Suzanne LaFrance on her recent election. I happen to visit Anchorage regularly, and I have a friendly suggestion. It is amazing to drive through downtown Anchorage without stopping. Find the municipal employees who synchronized the traffic signals on 5th Avenue and give these employees the added task of coordinating the city’s snow removal efforts. Piece of cake!
The Art Cafe: New owner, but the same commitment to those eager to show their artistic side
Over on Blueberry Avenue, The Art Cafe offers the Palmer community a place to go and get in touch with their artistic side through a number of creative outlets. Since the beginning of July, the cafe has been under the ownership of Becky Holsinger. A lifelong artist herself, Holsinger believed the opportunity to take over The Art Cafe would be a suitable fit for her.
Flag football fun
For more than a decade, the Mat-Su Sea Hawkers, with help from the NFL’s Seattle Seahawks, brought the Play 60 program to the Valley, encouraging youth to exercise at least 60 minutes per day. Following the guidance of the NFL, the Seahawks and the Sea Hawkers have pivoted with...
Letter: Christian nationalism and the state
If you have been around rural areas of the American Midwest and East Coast, a concerning yet fascinating pattern emerges with Trump flags, “Let’s Go Brandon” and similar slogans plastered on folks’ front lawns. Sometimes support for Trump and their Republican leaders is so passionate that households will place a flagpole on the edge of their property line to make sure that passing drivers view the MAGA or “Take Back America” message.

Letter: City of dandelions
In the late 1990s, Mayor Rick Mystrom introduced and promoted Anchorage as the City of Lights. He wanted to brighten our dark winters and he succeeded. Not only that, the positive change has been sustained ever since. Now, through neglect, we are promoting the City of Dandelions. Their dominance as...
Orange hawkweed, a menacing invasive plant, is spreading in Anchorage
That cluster of flame-orange, dandelion-like flowers you saw blooming somewhere in Anchorage? Those are no benevolent wildflowers. That’s orange hawkweed, an invasive weed experts say is one of the most difficult to control. The plant has the ability to take over lawns, wildflower meadows and other vegetation, and some attempts at eradication only stoke its growth.
Letter: Knowledge contrast
President Joe Biden can forget half of what he knows and still know more than Donald Trump will ever learn. Have something on your mind? Send to letters@adn.com or click here to submit via any web browser. Letters under 200 words have the best chance of being published. Writers should disclose any personal or professional connections with the subjects of their letters. Letters are edited for accuracy, clarity and length.
OPINION: Anchorage should reassess tests it uses as job qualification standards
Our new mayor has made it clear that staffing is one of her main priorities. We are dealing with serious shortages all across the board, including snow plowing and bus services. After working in adult education for three years supporting students to earn their GEDs, I believe the Municipality of Anchorage may be missing out on highly skilled and qualified job seekers who do not have a high school diploma or GED. An adult may not have a high school diploma for reasons unrelated to their abilities.
Anchorage’s Coen Niclai drafted by Miami Marlins
Miami Marlins director of amateur scouting Frankie Piliere’s plan for the final day of the 2024 MLB Draft was simple and similar to his approach through the first two days. “Keep stacking up talent,” Piliere said. “We’re not going to be the team that takes the foot off the gas pedal. We’re going to keep looking for every single way to add an impactful player because they’re still out there, and we’re going to find them.”

Patrick Simpson, owner of Alaska Plastic Recovery, turns the trash into plastic lumber that can be used like wood for building outdoor products. The Grizzly Wood, as...

A Willow man was sentenced to 30 months in prison for embezzling money from the Alaska city of Houston and a Wasilla-based company, then dodging taxes on the money. Jess Adams was also ordered to serve three years of supervised release, pay $1.5 million in restitution to the United States and pay additional restitution to Houston and the equipment company.
Madeline E. Goolie’s Linocut Prints
Madeline E. Goolie is a printmaker from Anchorage, Alaska. She is interested in expressing extravagant, overwhelming, feelings through her hand carved prints. Growing up she felt that showing her emotions was inconvenient and invaluable. As she is growing , she has learned that this is an unsustainable mindset. She now realizes that it is better to feel anything rather than nothing at all. These linocut prints are influenced by dramatic and exaggerated features that are often pulled from her own insecurities. She selects certain animal imagery to include in her work based on their symbolisms. Printmaking is often a strict art form, while her moody art style is loose and free formed a contrast that is important to her in her process.

The city of Anchorage could soon see a new sales tax if a proposal from local leaders gets the green light. The proposed 3% sales tax known as Project Anchorage and headed by the Anchorage Economic Development Corporation, would exempt most groceries, gas, rent, and medical care and expenses. The...
