With the clock running, a Vanderbilt transplant team races to Alaska for a heart
A surgeon stops a heart in Anchorage, Alaska. In the world of organ donation, this stoppage is known as "Cross Clamp Time." A clamp pinches the aorta, stopping blood flow. It's the official, recorded start of a race to get that heart wherever it's going. Too long, and the heart could freeze to the point of unviability.
Letter: Pack the court
Outraged by the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling that New Deal legislation was unconstitutional (the National Industrial Recovery Act, for instance), President Franklin Roosevelt threatened to “pack the court.” The United States was experiencing an existential crisis as the Great Depression failed to quickly ebb and give ground to recovery.
Anchorage Daily News will reduce print to 2 days a week, continue emphasis on digital growth
Starting next week, the Anchorage Daily News will shift from publishing its print newspaper six days a week to two days a week. The move will enable the ADN, which has the largest digital news audience in Alaska, to focus on digital efforts and be sustainable into the future, leaders of the organization said.
Letter: Poor game management
The state should stop killing wolves and bears in Southwest Alaska. There is no scientific proof that this has been effective in increasing the caribou populations in that area. Focus on determining why king salmon populations have declined and find the solution to that problem. And now barred owls are going to be shot to protect spotted owls! Come on. In my opinion, that is not right.
Sunday: Twins post dominant sweep of Bartlett
The American Legion Post 20 Twins swept Post 29 Bartlett on Sunday at Coral Seymour Memorial Park in Kenai. The Twins sit in third in the league at 6-3 and are 13-8 overall. Bartlett is last at 0-9 and 1-19. Post 20 won the league game 19-0 in five innings...
The Sunday Minefield – July 7, 2024
The August 20 primary election is just over six weeks away. I hope everyone enjoyed the long Fourth of July holiday weekend! I was down in Seward with the company I co-own, Tudor Road Studios, again live streaming the Mt. Marathon Race. Elected officials and candidates took place in Fourth of July parades all over the state. Anchorage Mayor Suzanne LaFrance was officially sworn in on Monday at Town Square Park, though not without some agitators who ruined the event. An aviation event in Fairbanks was also interrupted by pro-Hamas protestors. U.S. District Court Judge Josh Kindred abruptly announced his resignation from a lifetime seat, sending shockwaves through the legal community. And a decision by the Alaska Division of Elections leaves yet another House incumbent who is running unopposed.
Anchorage Daily News cuts print editions to twice a week, will continue e-paper six days a week
The Anchorage Daily News will reduce its print editions to twice weekly starting July 15, but will continue publishing an e-edition replica of the printed version six times a week, the newspaper reported Monday. The announcement comes the same week the Peninsula Clarion, which like the Juneau Empire was purchased...

Precollege program for rural, Alaska Native health students gets reboot and grant after funding gap
Of all the courses offered by the Della Keats precollege program, the three high school students in the University of Alaska Anchorage lobby were most struck by the cadaver lab in their Anatomy and Physiology course. It’s not the kind of opportunity students from rural Alaska usually get, which is the point.
Sunday: Miners nip Oilers
The Peninsula Oilers lost 2-1 to the Mat-Su Miners in Alaska Baseball League play Sunday at Hermon Brothers Field in Palmer. The Oilers dropped to 3-5 on a nine-game, eight-day road trip. That trip concludes Monday, when Peninsula travels to Lee Jordan Field in Chugiak to take on the Chugiak-Eagle...
Juneau’s Jacob Thibodeau and Mario Fata consistently cashing in at World Series of Poker
Anchorage pro Adam Hendrix remains Alaska’s most prominent poker player, but don’t sleep on Juneau stalwarts Jacob Thibodeau and Mario Fata, who have been cashing in regularly at the ongoing 55th annual World Series of Poker in Las Vegas. Thibodeau has already cashed in 10 events at this...
Letter: Sales tax thoughts
Rather than touting the fact that Anchorage does not have a sales tax, the ProjectAnchorage.com folks have chosen to make it a negative in hopes that we all see it the same way. When looking to relocate some 34 years ago, I paid attention to costs like sales tax and...

Letter: In defense of imperfect lawns
In the recent letter to the editor “Eradicate dandelions,” the author mentioned me and my profession (ecological landscape designer), in support of his position advocating the use of herbicides to control dandelions. Unfortunately, the author failed to mention some rather crucial details. First, I am an organic practitioner...
