Pope’s Creek Generating Plant (former) – Newburg MD
Rural Electrification Administration (REA), Public Works Funding. The Pope’s Creek Generating Plant, located on Popes Creek Road in Newburg, Maryland, was the first power plant in Charles County, Maryland. Per a county historical marker on site: “It was operated by the Southern Maryland Tri-County Rural Electric Cooperative (today known as SMECO) from 1938 to 1953. Its founding was a result of the Rural Electrification Act of 1936, part of President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s New Deal, which provided federal loans for the installation of electrical distribution systems to serve isolated rural areas of the United States.”
