Fox Nation’s Latest Doc Series Spotlights ‘The Godfather of Fentanyl’

Fox News is set to release a new documentary series on its streaming platform Fox Nation, and it’s centered around a major figure in the story of America’s opioid crisis who has flown mostly under the radar.

The Godfather of Fentanyl centers on George Erik Marquardt, a self-taught chemist who became a mob-backed kingpin with his creation of street fentanyl, a heroin substitute that became widespread among drug users in the 1990s. Marquardt has been compared by many to a real-life version of Walter White, the main character of AMC’s Breaking Bad, who went from chemistry teacher to meth dealer. As he becomes more successful, Marquardt spends his time dodging authorities until he ends up in federal custody (at Pennsylvania’s Lewisburg Federal Penitentiary, also known as the “Big House” that housed notorious figures such as mobster Al Capone, Teamsters Union president Jimmy Hoffa, and Henry Hill of Goodfellas fame).

The four-part series is hosted by Fox News anchor John Roberts, who takes the viewer back through America’s modern history with drugs in the 1960s and 1970s and when a teenage Marquardt first started experimenting with formulations of his own. The first episode starts streaming on Wednesday, August 14. Here is a clip from that episode, entitled “I’ll Be Your Sociopath”:
