Veteran Democratic Party strategist James Carville declared that the political career of Republican Florida Governor Ron DeSantis is “toast” after his failed attempt to challenge Donald Trump for the Republican Party’s nomination.

DeSantis suspended his presidential campaign in January after he failed to resonate with primary voters and tossed Trump a tepid endorsement . The lame-duck governor has since returned to Florida and has mostly remained out of national news cycles. Trump cruised through the primary and will face Vice President Kamala Harris in the general election in November.

On the Politics War Room podcast on Thursday, Carville and podcast co-host Al Hunt discussed recent wins by Democrats in Florida when the former eulogized the governor’s political career.

“DeSantis is done, all right? He is toast,” Carville said. “He can’t go back to the Trump people. The Moms for Liberty are getting slaughtered. Big flash point, people don’t like book burners, okay? They went all into that. I’m very reluctant to declare anyone’s political career over, but DeSantis, you may be done, dude. You’re just done. I don’t know if you’ve got a place to go.”

Carville concluded that while Democrats had struggled as of late to make inroads with voters in Florida and Texas, they must continue to fight for important Senate seats and remain aggressive.

As Politico noted last week, numerous Florida school board candidates that were backed by DeSantis were defeated in their respective races on Aug. 20. The governor put his weight behind 23 candidates, and 11 of them lost.

Writing for the Politico, Gary Fineout and Kimberly Leonard concluded :

The hits follow DeSantis ending his presidential campaign after coming in a distant second in the Iowa caucuses. Both political supporters and detractors are watching closely to gauge how this will impact an anticipated run for president in 2028. Continued losses in his home state over the two years of his term-limited tenure would dampen his prospects.
