GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — A suspect who is believed to have shot and killed a Michigan police officer has been arrested.

The Detroit News reports 44-year-old Michael Lopez was arrested just before 6:30 p.m. Monday in Detroit, approximately 31 hours after the deadly shooting.

Officer Mohamed Said, 26, of the Melvindale Police Department was killed while responding to a report of a suspicious person late Sunday morning . While investigating, the suspect took off, and Said gave chase. At some point, Said tried to use his Taser to subdue the suspect but was unsuccessful. At some point in the tussle, shots were fired, Said was hit, and the suspect fled the scene.

Melvindale Police Chief Robert Kennaley told The Detroit News that Said was a Melvindale native who had been with the department for just over a year.

Said is the third Michigan police officer to be killed in the line of duty in the last five weeks. Deputy Bradley Reckling with the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office was shot and killed on June 22 while following a suspected stolen truck in Detroit. Hillsdale County deputy William Butler was killed five days later during a traffic stop.

A vigil was held outside the Melvindale Police Department last night, shortly after Lopez was arrested. News 8 affiliate WDIV TV says fellow officers, family, friends and members of the community were there to grieve together.

“Yesterday, when I went into that backyard and found MO, it was the worst day of my police career,” a Melvindale police officer told WDIV TV. “Today is the second-worst day because it sunk in.”

The Melvindale Police Department says a visitation for Said will be held Thursday and a funeral will be held Friday.
