Memphis cybersecurity experts offer advice after Ticketmaster breach

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Check your email. If you received a notification of a data security incident at Ticketmaster, it's possible your personal information is up for sale on the dark web.

“It's terrible," said Ryan Zuber, a Memphis resident who has used Ticketmaster in the past.

In this regulatory filing , Live Nation wrote that a "criminal threat actor" offered user data for sale on the dark web.

The company specified that more than 1,000 users had been impacted.

Since then, users across Memphis and in the FOX13 newsroom have received emails that warn of leaked personal information and encrypted credit and debit card numbers.

“Honestly, that hurts my feelings," said Alexis Foster, a University of Memphis student. "A lot of people have fears of data loss.”

FOX13 asked cybersecurity professionals on how impacted users should protect their information.

"It's sad that we keep seeing major breaches like this over and over, but it's really getting harder and harder to defend against those kind of attacks," said Jeff Horton, the owner of One Point Solutions Group.

“A lot of people are using the same passwords over and over again," said Melanie Suria, the owner of Memphis Computer Support. "It's not a good situation at all.”

What to do if you've been impacted:

    • Upgrade all your passwords to secure & different phrases (a password manager can help you keep track)

    • Monitor your bank accounts for unusual activity

    • Freeze your credit to prevent someone from stealing your identity

Ticketmaster is also offering users one year of free credit monitoring.

Here is advice on how to freeze your credit for free.

“This just brings up the absolute urgency for more secure passwords," Suria told FOX13.

"Use good cyber hygiene," Horton said. "Take care of your passwords. Ultimately, you have to protect your own information."
