MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Some tenants at a Fox Meadows apartment complex are concerned they may lose utility service next week after they received a notice from MLGW of termination of service with the landlord.

MLGW said there is still the possibility the issue will be handled before any problems arise, but the scorching temperatures have a resident of the Emerald Pointe Apartments worried.

The notice warns of utility service termination in the next week, saying “Circumstances require termination of MLGW’s current business relationship with your landlord.”

Residents complain about rodents, trash at Fox Meadows apartment complex

“They’re charging people all of this money, they’re not fixing anything and at the same time we get a notice from MLGW letting us know they’re going to cut our power off due to non-payment by the office,” said the resident.

He says he is already dealing with not having hot water. This new possible problem makes things even worse.

“Right now with us finding out through this notice, it’s kinda, it’s scary. I have kids. I have a pet and a wife here,” said the man. “I called MLGW. MLGW said as of right now, there’s nothing that I can do on my behalf, but it’s something I have to discuss with the apartment complex.”

He says he has yet to hear anything from the property managers.

We also tried to ask, but when we approached the leasing office, we saw someone inside lock the door, and no one answered when we knocked.

When we called we got a recording saying, “The mailbox of the person you are calling is currently full.”

Residents at risk of losing utilities blame apartment management

A spokesperson with MLGW did tell us this:

“Some apartments have a master water meter and handle the billing of individual tenants. Therefore, individual tenants are not MLGW’s water customers and MLGW has no means of restoring water to individual units once disconnected. In terms of electricity, a disconnection would only affect common areas.

These notices are standard operating procedure to make tenants aware of a possible cut-off and generally the bill is paid in time to avoid disconnection. Individual tenants have remedies against their landlords.

The deadline is July 9. We will keep you posted if the bill is paid in time.
