An argument between Church’s Chicken employee Anitra West and a customer turned deadly on Monday night (July 8) after local authorities in Memphis say the customer shot West. She was later pronounced dead.

The fatal shooting occurred just before 9 p.m. at the fast food franchise ‘s downtown Memphis location. Officers responded to the call and found West with at least one gunshot wound. The preliminary investigation concluded that West was working in the drive-thru when a woman with purple hair in a “teal-colored SUV” pulled up and the two got into a verbal altercation .

As reported by USA Today , the statement from authorities read, “The teal-colored SUV drove off the lot and the victim walked outside of the business to get some air. A few moments later a gunshot was heard and the teal-colored SUV was seen on video speeding off the parking lot.”

A Church’s Chicken spokesperson released a statement on the matter, per Action News 5 . “We are deeply saddened by the tragic loss of one of our team members. Our thoughts and prayers go out to their family during this difficult time […] Our location at 2963 Park Avenue will be closed for the next few days as we address the needs of the victim’s family and our team members.”

West’s family described the 48-year-old mother as a “shining light and a beautiful soul.” Ex-husband, Loranzo, told the outlet, “It doesn’t feel real yet because we haven’t been able to see her. I’m a better man because of her. That’s what will be missed the most, because everywhere she went, she impacted everybody.”

The two share a 12-year-old daughter and were high school sweethearts . An arrest has not yet been made, but the vehicle in question has been recovered.
