The Shelby County District Attorney's Office told FOX13 that one of those juveniles, a 17-year-old boy, had a detention hearing on Friday, July 19. That child faces six counts of attempted first-degree murder, six counts of possessing a firearm during the commission of a dangerous felony, evading arrest on foot and theft of a property between $$10,000 and $60,000. He's also been charged in other cases with seven counts of aggravated robbery, four counts of carjacking, attempted first-degree murder, five counts of employment of a firearm during the commission of a dangerous felony, three counts of reckless endangerment, possessing a prohibited weapon, theft of property less than $2,500 and theft of property between $2,500 and $10,000 according to police.
"This incident is troubling for several reasons, including the shooting taking place on the interstate and the fact that this group of violent offenders shot into a car where minors were present. We will do everything we can to ensure justice is served and all individuals responsible are punished appropriately," Shelby County District Attorney Steve Mulroy said in a press release.
The second juvenile, a 16-year-old boy, who faces charges related to the shooting was detained on June 24, the DA's office said. He has been charged with six counts of attempted first-degree murder, six counts of employment of a firearm during the commission of a dangerous felony, evading arrest on foot and theft of property between $10,000 and $60,000. MPD said he also had outstanding warrants possession of a controlled substance with intent to manufacture, deliver or sell, unlawful possession of a weapon, theft of property $1,000 or less and aggravated robbery. Both of those juveniles are being held on a $1 million bond.
Two men also face charges connection to the shooting on I-240 that happened June 12 on the Memphis interstate near Poplar Avenue. Kendrick Ray and Lorenzo Watson are also being held on a $1 million bond.
MPD said that the group fired shots at officers after the interstate shooting as police chased their stolen 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander down James Road and Highland Street.
FOX13 spoke to an Army veteran who claims she was carjacked and shot by Ray at a South Memphis gas station on June 3. She said her girlfriend and kids were in the car at the time. “I was shot three times: one in my artery in my leg, one down, lower leg calf area and left thigh,” she said.
Memphis Police said that the June shooting on I-240 was caused by road rage. Ray and Watson were both charged with six counts of attempted first degree murder, evading arrest, six counts of possession of a firearm during the commission of a dangerous felony and theft of property between $10,000 and $60,000.
All four children, aged between two and eight, face a long road to recovery, according to their mother Brittney Ireland. All were critically injured in the shooting
"“I'm OK, I'm grateful," Ireland said. "I'm just happy that they're alive. That's just the main thing. I'm happy that my kids are alive. I'm fine. I don't have to plan a funeral. I've lost a kid before, so I know what it feels like."
