Teen arrested for kidnapping that ended in chase, crash

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A teen was arrested and charged with kidnapping after police say he tied a man up in his car and threatened him for money.

Adrian Starks, 18, was charged with robbery, kidnapping, evading arrest to wit: vehicle, evading arrest to wit: foot, and no driver’s license. His bond has not been set.

On July 19, around 6 p.m., a woman informed officers that her husband had been kidnapped in his black Hyundai Elantra. Officers responded to the kidnapping in the 6400 block of Moriah Lane.

Memphis Police say the woman was able to keep an eye on her husband’s car until officers located the vehicle. They attempted a traffic stop, but the vehicle refused, initiating a pursuit which eventually ended in the car crashing near Sharpe Avenue and Robinhood Lane.

The suspect, later identified as Starks, allegedly got out of the car and attempted to run, but was detained. The victim was found inside the vehicle and was transported to Baptist East in non-critical condition, police say.

Officers were later advised that the victim was approached by Starks, who asked if he had a gun and some marijuana. MPD says the victim dropped his keys while speaking with Starks. Starks grabbed them and demanded the victim give him money to get the keys back.

Reports say the victim did not have money, and Starks threatened to shoot him if he did not get money.

Starks allegedly put the victim in the passenger seat of his car and tied his hands and feet with an extension cord.

Reports show Adrian Starks also has prior arrests for domestic assault, aggravated stalking, violation of protection order, and violation of bail conditions.

He is scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday morning.
