1 rescued from Mississippi River, 2nd person still missing

UPDATE: Memphis Police have located the body of the man who went missing in the Mississippi River.

At 7 a.m., the Memphis Police Department resumed the search for the missing boater. At 10:10 a.m., the body of a male who matched the missing man’s description was located and recovered.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — One person was rescued from the Mississippi River Friday morning, but officials are still searching for another.

Search crews were called off Friday evening. Police said they will make plans Saturday morning for how to proceed.

According to reports, a citizen called police at around 6:45 a.m., saying they could hear someone crying for help from the river.

Officers from the North Main Precinct arrived and saw the man in the water. A witness says the victim was screaming for help and flailing for about 25 minutes before help arrived.

“An on-duty north main station lieutenant went through the harbor and found a retired Memphis police officer with a boat. They got in that boat and they were able to rescue one person and save his life,” said Memphis Police Assistant Chief Don Crowe.

Crowe told WREG he does not know how the boat capsized, but says the victims had “boat problems.”

The victim was rescued from 16 feet deep water and taken to Regional One Trauma in non-critical condition. Officials are in the process of rescuing or recovering the other individual, they told WREG.

Crowe says this will be an all-day search and rescue effort in collaboration with the Memphis Fire Department.

“We encourage everybody if you’re on a boat, wear a life jacket. even if you’re an experienced swimmer, always have that life jacket on,” he said.
