Burn permits for outdoor residential burning will be suspended in Mendocino County on Monday, according to Cal Fire. Residents living on land maintained by the county will not be allowed to burn landscape debris, such as branches or leaves.

Heavy winter rains have led to significant grass and vegetation growth, which combined with hot and dry conditions means Mendocino County can expect an increased fire risk.

Cal Fire reports that statewide, firefighters have responded to over 2,600 wildfires since January 1.

According to Cal Fire, the suspension does not include campfires at organized campgrounds or on private property if the area surrounding the campfire has enough space surrounding it to prevent spread to the wildland. Campfire permits are available for purchase from local fire stations or online at preventwildfireca.org.

Special permits are available for temporary burns related to land management, agriculture, fire training and other types of burn activities necessary for health or safety. Permits require an inspection by Cal Fire officials.

Cal Fire requests that homeowners prepare for wildfires by creating and maintaining at least 100 feet of defensible space around homes or outbuildings. This includes removing all dead or dying vegetation within 100 feet of all structures, using fire resistant plants in landscaping and considering alternatives to disposing of landscape debris, such as chipping. Having an evacuation plan in order is also helpful.
