After over 100 million years of existence, the white sturgeon may be fading from the San Francisco Bay estuary.

On June 19, the California Fish and Game Commission approved white sturgeon as a candidate species for listing under the California Endangered Species Act. Bay Area scientists say their decline is due to increased pollution and a loss of deep-river spawning grounds.

The listing could not only affect the sport fishing industry but throw more legal weight behind the argument against state and federal projects that divert and store water from the Sacramento San Joaquin Delta.

The Sites Reservoir and the Delta Conveyance Tunnel, which are planned to draw excess water from the upper Sacramento River, are both designed to only capture water during wet periods. According to wildlife experts, that's the same excess water the white sturgeon needs to spawn.

In November 2023, several advocacy groups including San Francisco Baykeeper, California Sportfishing Protection Alliance, The Bay Institute, and Restore the Delta petitioned to list the California white sturgeon as threatened under both the state and federal Endangered Species Acts.

A suspected drunk driver crashed a car into the San Leandro Police Department headquarters on Sunday morning, police said.

Officers found the 34-year-old driver unresponsive inside the Lexus sedan and later arrested him after he awoke, according to San Leandro police Lt. Abe Teng.

Police suspect alcohol factored in the crash due to items found inside the vehicle and after the driver showed symptoms of being under the influence, Teng said.

The driver was booked at Santa Rita Jail after he was medically cleared at a local hospital. No other motorists or pedestrians were injured in the collision, the department said.

Four of San Francisco's leading mayoral candidates took on each other for the third time during their debate on Monday, with incumbent Mayor London Breed coming under heavy fire from her opponents over how her administration tackled the city's biggest problems.

At the Golden Gate Park's County Fair Building, Breed, former San Francisco mayor Mark Farrell, District 11 Supervisor Ahsha Safai and anti-poverty advocate Daniel Lurie battled each other to gain the interest of a room full of voters. Aaron Peskin, who participated in the two previous debates, chose to skip this one.

Debate questions focused on public safety, homelessness, mental health, transportation, and revitalizing downtown. The first query brought up last week's death of 74-year-old Corazon Dandan, who was pushed by a homeless man in front of an oncoming BART train at Powell Street Station.

Farrell was quick to tie her death to Breed's leadership.

Other candidates repeatedly criticized Breed's approaches to tackling the city's biggest issues such as crime, drugs and housing. She was forced to defend her track record while opponents painted a bleak picture of the current state of San Francisco under her leadership.

Breed upheld her strategies of addressing homelessness and mental health by bringing up her implementation of street crisis response teams that are an alternative to law enforcement and offer mental health services such as addiction treatment.

University of California, Berkeley police are investigating a possible arson that occurred within campus grounds Monday afternoon.

A fire ignited at 4:19 p.m. on top of the Golden Bear Cafe located at 2 Sather Road near the campus's central Sproul Plaza. Police said crews quickly extinguished the blaze and reported "minimal damage" to the structure.

Police said the fire was a result of arson and was "malicious and intentional."

The cafe sits on the eastern end of Cesar E. Chavez Student Center, which was built in 1960 and houses several student services, including the campus program for disabled students.

Monday's fire comes just three weeks after authorities arrested Oakland resident Casey Goonan, 34, for allegedly orchestrating "the firebombing attack of a UC Berkeley Police Department vehicle and three other arson attacks" on campus in June, according to Cal Fire.
