A man from Covelo will be sentenced this month for fatally shooting the 35-year-old mother of his child while she was on the phone with 911 in March. 43-year-old Johnathan Draughan pleaded guilty on June 21st to killing Brandy Kay Mathieson at her Covelo home, according to Mendocino County Superior Court records. Mina Fire burning in Mendocino County prompts evacuation warnings
Fire crews are battling a wildland and structure fire near Covelo in far northern Mendocino County estimated to be about 50 acres, according to Cal Fire. The fire, named the Mina Fire, is northwest of Covelo and was reported around 2:06 p.m. as a structure fire that had spread to the wildland in the 97500 block of Mina Road. It is currently at zero containment.Both Cal Fire and local agencies are responding, including helicopters and air tankers. The Mendocino County Sheriff's Office issued an evacuation warning for the surrounding area, zone MEN-1COV01. Woman’s Body Found on Mendocino Coast Months Ago Identified
A woman who was found dead off the Mendocino County coast nearly three months ago has been positively identified. Twenty-nine-year-old Angela Geovanna Carrillo-Paloma was found dead in the ocean south of Fort Bragg on April 26th. She was not carrying an ID and did not have any identifying marks. Carrillo-Paloma was identified using DNA from family. The cause and manner of her death has not been confirmed.

Two men and a teen were arrested after a brief chase from Fort Bragg to Mendocino last week that ended with a crash, a foot chase and an hours-long search by law enforcement officers.
