On the Vineyard Ice Cream Trail
Did you know that July is National Ice Cream Month? Naturally, the folks at the Massachusetts Department of Agricultural Resources celebrated the occasion by assembling a Massachusetts “ice cream trail” — a way to introduce people to parlors and creameries around the state that showcase their Bay State roots with local ingredients. The map is due to be released in August.
Jewel comes to the Campground
Working to sustain and maintain the beautiful Campground in Oak Bluffs, with its charming and colorful architecture and storied history, is part and parcel of Kelly Feirtag’s job as general manager of the MV Camp Meeting Association (MVCMA). No small task, but it’s not her first Grand Illumination by a long shot.
‘Give Me Shelter’ art show and sale
Sheltering homeless women, men, and children on the Vineyard requires creative financing at all times. Harbor Homes knows. Programs from its winter overnight shelter to the MV Cares Outreach Coalition are seeing a surge in demand for supportive services, according to Jennifer Frank, Harbor Homes board chair. (Thirty-two new people sought shelter from Harbor Homes last winter.) This two-day exhibit, the organization’s fourth annual “Give Me Shelter” show, takes the idea of creative financing to the bank. “We hope this art show helps us raise much-needed funds so the work of Harbor Homes can continue, but we also hope this event raises awareness of the very real issue of homelessness here in our community,” Frank said.
‘Overcome’ and the tyranny of normal
Good theater engages us in innumerable ways. It makes us think and feel, draws us into the present moment and keeps us there. It also provides a peephole into someone else’s experience — one we may not share — and ultimately, hopefully, empathy blooms. That’s how real change happens.
Vineyard Shop Dogs: Nell's Dynamic Duo
In the heart of Edgartown, Nell and Nell Home, with their beautiful array of clothes and home goods, stand out on their own. However, it’s the two Labradoodle shop dogs, Captain and Bosun, who make shopping at the stores a truly memorable experience. Mairéad MacClarence, the owner, has been a fixture at Nell since she was 14, starting as a summer and holiday helper and, for the last eight years, as its devoted proprietor.
Buster and his sidekick Carl
Buster, a “Westie,” for West Highland white terrier, is quite the character. He’s no slouch, he has a job. Works as a certified therapy dog at various locations, often six times a week when at home in Winchester, just outside of Boston, with seasonal Vineyarder Carl Kaplan.

Womanists Celebrate Faith in Sisterhood
This year’s theme of the second annual Womanists at the Inkwell conference is Just a Sister Away: Cultivating and Celebrating Sister Circles. Organizers said this underscores the importance of Black sisterhood and friendship to the womanist movement. Womanism is a term coined by Alice Walker as an alternative to...
