Circus in the Sun: Bella’s outdoors show is a ‘WOW!’
After all the ups and downs my life has had lately, I needed the relief of something familiar. I now live in an unheated room in the Sunset, so even sunny days for the rest of SF mean the marine layer will linger at my place up in the hills. As such, I greatly appreciate the opportunity to head down to Yerba Buena Gardens , sit in the sun, and watch clowns be silly for a crowd of eager kids. (And seeing Boots Riley sit in the audience sure didn’t hurt.)
Destiny Muhammad Quartet at Stanford
Virtuosa harpist, storyteller and improvisational pioneer Destiny Muhammad has turned the harp into an instrument that makes people of all ages stop and gasp, “I didn’t know a harp could do that!” Muhammad, who performs professionally and at enrichment assemblies in schools, weaves social justice work and African American history education (which is social justice work these days) with gorgeous music. Her sultry vocals and eclectic style draw inspiration from jazz greats like Alice Coltrane and Dorothy Ashby. Part of the Stanford Jazz Workshop.
Marty Stuart & His Fabulous Superlatives in Menlo Park
When it comes to country music, not many old-timers are around. Gone are greats like Waylon, Merle and Cash—although Willie is still writing and performing, bless his braided, stoned head. However, some who got their start with said greats continue to spread the gospel of true country music—musicians like Marty Stuart (& His Fabulous Superlatives), who got his start with Lester Flatt. Floating between country, honky-tonk and pure Americana, Stuart is a member of the Grand Ole Opry and Country Music Hall of Fame, winning an impressive five Grammys out of an even more impressive 16 nominations. For those wondering where the real country went, look no further.
