    2024-06-02

KINGSFORD — Track and field athletes from Menominee, Stephenson and Carney-Nadeau all collected individual championships at Saturday’s U.P. Division 1-2-3 Finals in Kingsford.

Darrent Butler gave the Maroons a U.P. title in the boys’ Division 1 high jump after soaring to victory at a height of six feet, two inches, edging Negaunee’s Brady Mager (5’ 11”) by three inches.

Stephenson had a pair of Division 3 U.P. champions in Faith Cappaert and Kayela Putnam.

Cappaert finished well ahead of Newberry’s Abby Taylor to win the 800-meter run with a new personal-best time of 2:25.91, while Taylor settled for second at 2:33.34.

Putnam won the pole vault with a vault of 10’ 0”, breaking her Stephenson High School record of 9’ 6” that she set earlier in the year at Bark River-Harris. She fell just short of tying the U.P. Division 3 record of 10’ 0.25”.

Putnam also partook in the 3,200m run and came away with seventh place after clocking in with a time of 13:44.12.
