MENOMINEE — From the first pitch to the final swing of the bat, the Menominee Legion baseball team was in control of Tuesday’s doubleheader against Kingsford at Spies Field.

Pitching and defense powered the Red Wave in both contests, with Menominee ripping Kingsford 7-2 in game one before polishing off the sweep with an 11-1 thumping in the nightcap.

Conner Schroeder and Tyler Bouty kept Kingsford off-balance all afternoon, as the Red Wave’s pitching duo combined to allow just six hits over the course of both games.

Schroeder took a no-hitter into the fifth inning before the Greens managed to cobble together a pair of base knocks. He finished his day with four hits, an earned run and nine strikeouts through four-and-one-third innings of work.

Bouty recorded the final five outs in game one before tossing all five innings of game two, holding the Greens to two hits while racking up five punchouts in the winning effort.

Menominee’s offense provided plenty of run support, with the Red Wave collecting 19 hits between the two games.

Kingsford dug itself an early hole in game one after Jonah Doenier hit three consecutive Red Wave batters to load the bases with two outs.

Doenier proceeded to issue a walk to Chase Monette that allowed Schroeder to score and give Menominee a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first.

Blake Malke smoked a two-run single in the bottom of the second while Schroeder and Hunter Brief both scored on errors as the Red Wave’s advantage grew to 5-0.

Monette tacked on an RBI-single of his own to make it a 6-0 affair in the bottom of the fourth before Kingsford got off the schneid thanks to an RBI-single from Nate Buchcuski in the top of the fifth.

Schroeder responded by tattooing an RBI-triple to deep left field to give the Red Wave a 7-1 cushion in the bottom of the frame before the Greens answered back with an RBI-single off the bat of Brock Flaminio in the top of the sixth.

Kingsford’s rally ended there, as Bouty picked up the final two outs to end game one in favor of Menominee.

The Greens looked to regroup in game two and jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the second after Dom Frederickson scored on a Red Wave error.

Menominee ensured that would be as good as matters would get for the Greens, with Monette scoring on an error to tie matters up in the bottom of the second.

Schroeder blasted a two-run double while Ethan Short chipped in an RBI-single as part of a five-run outburst for Menominee in the bottom of the third.

Short, Monette and Gable Buck all slapped RBI-singles to push the Red Wave ahead 9-1 in the bottom of the fourth before Bouty crossed home plate on a wild pitch to make it a 10-1 game in the bottom of the fifth.

Schroeder wrapped up the sweep with an RBI that brought home Robert Finger and gave Menominee the 10-run mercy rule win.
