Authorities are investigating a possible homicide after a man was found dead in a Merced park.

At about 1 a.m. on July 13, a patrol officer was flagged down by a woman and informed of a deceased person in McNamara Park, according to Merced Police Detective Patrick Radke. Police said the man was found in an area of the park near the main entrance to soccer fields off of Canal Street.

Life-saving measures were attempted by fire department and paramedic crews but were ultimately unsuccessful, according to authorities. The man is believed to be a Merced resident in his 40s and appeared to have an injury to his head, according to Radke.

Authorities said the cause of death is unknown.

Detectives were able to speak with some possible witnesses and located surveillance, according to Radke. The investigation remains active and ongoing while detectives work to locate any additional witnesses and surveillance as the death is investigated as a possible homicide.

Police said no suspects have been identified or arrested in connection with the death.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Merced Police Detective Saldivar at 209-388-7735. Anonymous tips can be submitted by calling 209-385-4725 or through the Merced Area Crime Stoppers website .
