A 7-year-girl died Thursday night after being struck by a truck while riding her scooter in what police term a “very tragic accident.”

Mesa authorities initially said the girl died in a hit-and-run collision near Broadway and Horne, but video showed that the driver hit the 7-year-old as he was pulling into the driveway of a fourplex and did not leave the scene.

The accident occurred about 6:15 p.m. May 23 when the driver of a full-size F-150 truck with off road tires was traveling westbound on 3 rd Avenue “against the sunset when it made a right hand turn into the driveway of a multiple family home (fourplex),” according to a release Friday from the Mesa Police Department.

“The vehicle drove to the back of the building and parked. When the driver walked to the front of the building, he noticed a little girl and her scooter lying in the driveway with injuries. The driver immediately called 911, unaware of what happened to her.

“This is believed to be a very tragic accident with no charges filed against the driver,” the release stated.
