A man was severely burned in a grease fire explosion on Wednesday evening at his home in Mesa, officials said.

Mesa Fire and Police Department crews were dispatched to the neighborhood near University Drive and Greenfield Road around 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.

According to officials, the man and his child were in the home when the oil that was being heated on the stove exploded. Neighbors heard the explosion and placed the emergency call.

The explosion caused a window to blow out, as well as severe burns to the man's torso. The child was reportedly uninjured, and fire crews were able to put out the small fire without incident.

The man was taken to the Arizona Burn Center in Phoenix for treatment; his current condition is unknown.
