Hazardous materials don’t belong in trash cans or recycle barrels. The city of Mesa is making it even easier for residents to safely dispose of their household hazardous waste by extending operating hours at the household hazardous materials facility.

The facility, 2412 N. Center St. in Mesa, is now open 7 a.m.-2 p.m. Wednesday-Saturday, according to a release.

The household hazardous materials facility accepts a variety of hazardous materials, including:

    • Fireworks
    • Paints and solvents
    • Automotive fluids
    • Household cleaners
    • Pesticides and fertilizers
    • Batteries
    • Electronics

Residents are encouraged to take advantage of the extended hours to dispose of these items safely. Improper disposal of hazardous items can cause fires in collection vehicles or at waste facilities and pose additional environmental health risks, the release states.

“The extended hours are a direct response to community feedback,” said Solid Waste Director Sheri Collins. “We recognize the need for more flexible drop-off times and are pleased to provide additional hours of service.”
