Two Mesa teens were indicted on arson charges in connection with an incident where an explosive device was set outside the front door of a Mesa home.

Eighteen-year-old Daniel Traynor and 19-year-old Eliyzar Frias were indicted on five felony counts stemming from the June 13 incident in Mesa, according to a release from Maricopa County Attorney Rachel Mitchell’s office.

The defendants approached a Mesa home near Guadalupe Road and Arizona Avenue and dropped off an explosive device on the front door, it states.

The release said that the homeowner was alerted to this by the home’s security system, and as he was close to the front door, the device exploded. The explosion destroyed several windows in the home, including one above the victim’s head, leading to thousands of dollars’ worth of damage.

Traynor and Frias were indicted June 26 on one count of arson of an occupied structure (class two dangerous felony), one count of aggravated assault (class three dangerous felony), one count of depositing explosives (class four dangerous felony), one count of criminal damage (class four felony) and one count of disorderly conduct (class six dangerous felony).

“Regardless of someone’s age, these destructive and potentially deadly acts will not be tolerated,” Mitchell said in the release.

Traynor and Frias are being held on a $100,000 secured appearance bond and remain in custody, it states.
