The 32nd annual National Association of Letter Carriers “Stamp Out Hunger” food drive returns to the Valley on May 11.

United Food Bank in Mesa is one of the primary recipients for donations made in the East Valley.

The yearly drive is an essential opportunity for area food banks such as United Food Bank to stock their shelves for the coming summer months when demand typically increases and donations tend to decrease, according to a release.

Residents across the country, including those in the East Valley, are asked to place nonperishable food donations by their mailboxes before 8 a.m. on Saturday, May 11. These will be picked up by their local carrier and will begin arriving at post offices by 4 p.m.

The Stamp Out Hunger food drive is one of the largest food drives of the year for United Food Bank. Last year, the local food bank collected 74,001 pounds of food. United Food Bank serves more than 2.5 million Arizonans annually, with 52,000 meals being distributed daily to those in need living in the East Valley and eastern Arizona.

“The number of Arizonans experiencing hunger and food insecurity continues to rise each year,” United Food Bank CEO Jason Reed said in the release. “We are thrilled to once again be a recipient of this year’s Stamp Out Hunger food drive. Thank you to the National Association of Letter Carriers, the postal workers and entire Arizona community for helping feed our fellow neighbors.”

The National Association of Letter Carriers is the chief organizer of the one-day food drive. The effort is held annually on the second Saturday in May in 10,000 cities and towns throughout the country. The food drive has collected more than 1.9 billion pounds of food since the drive began in 1992.
