HIBBING—Rock Ridge had quite the day at the John Tingstand Invitational Track and Field Meet Thursday at Dr. Ben Owens Stadium in Cheever Field.

The Wolverines accumulated four first-place finishes, plenty of top eight finishes and set some school records en route to 165 points to place first in the eight-team event.

Hibbing finished second with 141, followed by International Falls with 104, Ely 87, Chisholm 64, Hermantown 63, Mountain Iron-Buhl 36 and Bigfork 13.

Not only that, but Allie Fink set a new school record in the triple jump at 34-feet, to win the Lynae Morrow Triple Jump Award, and both Sophie Roark and Shelbie Novak set a new school record in the high jump, with both of them clearing 4-10. Novak placed second, while Roark was fourth.

“Allie, I kind of expected her to do that,” Rock Ridge coach Deanna Kerzie said. “I didn’t know if she would, but she’s becoming stronger, stronger and stronger every week in the triple jump. I thought she might do this, and she deserves it.”

Aside from Fink, Lizzy Fultz was first in the 200 in 27.36; Maija Rantala was first in the 100 hurdles (17.96); Kayden Maturi, Addison Youngren, Allison Fink and Fultz were first in the 4x200 (1:50.58).

“We had fun,” Kerzie said. “It was so nice to not have a meet that is extremely stressful, like True Team and IRC coming up and sections. It was just fun. It was just the girls and the bonding. The bonding was more important than anything, the cheering.

‘I think about 80-percent of our girls got personal bests. The weather, too. We didn’t know what to do. It was warm out. What do you do because it’s so warm? The sprinters because it was warm, and the high jumpers, they were loose. They were able to perform, do their personal bests. We did phenomenal. I love coming here. The girls love it here.”

The Bluejackets got first-place finishes from Brynn Babich in the 400 (1:02.50); Tara Hertling in the 800 (2:23.13); Jocelyn Strukel in the 1600 (5:20.88); Emma Reini in the 3200 (13:01.50); Hertling, Hannah Farnsworth, Hattie Eskeli and Jorie Anderson in the 4x400 (4:15.26); Strukel, Avery Kukowski, Gianna Figueroa and Anderson the 4x800 (10:14.09); and Isabelle Walto in the shot put (29-8).

Acting coach James Plese knew his team got out-pointed in the sprints and field events, which led to Rock Riege’s victory.

“We want to do well in our home meet,” Plese said. “We wanted to win the Morrow Trophy and the McKibbon trophy, but we came up a little short there. Tip your hat. Rock Ridge had a day. They sprinted and jumped well, and that’s where we were a little weak.

“I thought it went alright. Andrea (Petroske) did a nice job for us. Brynn ran well in the 400, Tara in the 800, Jocelyn and Avery in the 1600 and Emma saw an opening in the 3200. She wanted to jump on that, and she helped us out there.”

Chisholm took home a couple of first, with Zoe Plombon winning the 100 (13.11), and Tresa Baumgard winning the high jump (5-3).

Sarah Visser of Ely won the long jump (14-10), and Kaylin Visser won the discus with a toss of 96-4.50.

Mountain Iron-Buhl’s Addison Lobe won the 300 hurdles in 52.74.

Hermantown’s Cora Lord won the McKibbon Award

Overall, it was a great meet.

“It was great to see John here, cruising around in the golf cart and up in the press box,” Plese said. “It’s always fun to see Tingy come back. He meant a lot to the program for over 20 years.

“We had a good day, and hopefully, we build on some of the performances and head into the conference and section meets.”
