CHISHOLM—Crews with heavy equipment are at work on the grounds of Minnesota Discovery Center (MDC) in Chisholm trying to restore the pond at MDC along with some critically needed infrastructure upgrades, according to Char Conger MDC Executive Director.

MDC remains open through the construction, which started May 6, and has a full line up of events coming up. Visitors may experience some rerouting of foot traffic in the interim.

The $1.58 million project is funded by capital improvement maintenance funds from Iron Range Resources and Rehabilitation Board (IRRRB). Due to the significant investment, the cost is being split between two budget years, FY 2023 and FY 2024.

There are multiple benefits to the project, including cost savings, enhanced aesthetics through more efficient pumping, and improved habitat.

“The pond, a cherished feature of the Minnesota Discovery Center, has long served as a focal point for visitors seeking tranquility and connection with nature. However, over time, environmental factors and nearly 40 years of operation have taken their toll, resulting in degradation of the pond infrastructure and ecosystem,” Conger wrote in a news release.

Conger said MDC is anticipating a significant cost savings once the project is complete as the pond leaks and its pumps are inefficient. The pond, created in 1985, is part of the original system.

in a news release, the project is broken down in detail.

    • Infrastructure upgrades: critically needed upgrades to the infrastructure of the pond liners, pumps, and weir systems, ensuring they remain safe, operable, and efficient, as well as functionally

and aesthetically conducive to educational programming and venue rentals.

    • Habitat Restoration: Through careful planning and implementation, we aim to restore and enhance habitat diversity within and around the pond area. This will involve the reintroduction of native plant species, creation of wildlife-friendly spaces, and improvement of water quality. Erosion Control: Measures will be taken to mitigate erosion along the pond’s shoreline, preserving

its structural integrity and preventing sedimentation.”

Conger noted that native species such as dragon flies struggle to survive with the inconsistent water levels experienced with the leaky system.

“The MN Discovery Center is a non profit 501©3 institution that maintains and operates the buildings and property that are assets owned by the State of Minnesota. We extend sincere gratitude to the Iron Range Resources

and Rehabilitation (IRRR) for their unwavering financial support and commitment to the revitalization of our treasured institution,” Conger wrote. “Together, we are laying the groundwork for a brighter future for the Minnesota Discovery Center and the communities it serves.”

The project is on target to be completed by July of this year—on time for July weddings. Accommodations were made for a wedding held earlier this month, and there were no weddings booked for this June due to the construction.

Bands Brews & Barbecue resumes Thursday, June 6 starting at 4 p.m. The summertime music and food spectacular is held most Thursdays through the summer months. There is no admission charge after 4 p.m. on Thursday.

A free concert, “People’s Music: Songs of the IWW” featuring Shannon Murray, folk/punk musician and storyteller, is being held from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, June 6, in the MDC theater. Complimentary dessert, coffee, and lemonade are being served.

The first of MDC’s Red Dirt Summer Concert Series is on June 14. Tickets are required for the Red Dirt Concert Series.
