Fifteen St. Mary’s Dominican High School juniors were presented book awards from universities and colleges to celebrate achievements of the junior class. The annual book awards are in recognition of academic excellence, strong character and commitment to community service. School counselors, teachers and administrators nominate the student or students they feel best embody the criteria set by each college or university.
Greater New Orleans Foundation invites applications for Gert Town Community Fund
A donor-advised fund of the Greater New Orleans Foundation, the Gert Town Community Fund works to enhance the quality of life for people in the community of Gert Town. The fund invites applications from nonprofit organizations working to address the needs of children and youth, housing, older adult services (including transportation), community leadership and capacity building, adult education, and legal services (successions, taxes, or other housing matters). The fund is also interested in community beautification projects (e.g., tree planting, green space maintenance, and neighborhood cleanup).

Louisiana Ranked as Hardest Place to Save
Forbes Advisor has released a new study, ranking states by how difficult it is to save money as a resident of each respective state. According to the original research, the national personal savings rate has decreased from 20% in 2020 to 3.8% as of January 2024. The ranking for each state, plus the District of Columbia, is determined based on indicators in these key categories: income, debt, cost of living, taxes, and housing.

Saints' California training camp practices will be closed to the public
This is very disappointing. The New Orleans Saints won’t be opening their training camp practices at UC Irvine to the public, per NewOrleans.Football’s Nick Underhill. We expected this when every other team practicing in Southern California this summer announced plans for fans to attend their training camps, but there’s confirmation.

Multi-instrumentalist Mahmoud Chouki is a master of guitar, oud and other stringed instruments, and his compositions span the globe, wrapping in styles from his native Morocco, North Africa, Latin America and New Orleans, his new home. Chouki writes a love letter to New Orleans on his new album, “Caravan: From Marrakech to New Orleans,” which was produced by Jamison Ross and features musicians Herlin Riley, John Boutte, Jason Marsalis, Oscar Rossignoli and more. Chouki celebrates the album with two shows on Thursday, July 25, at Snug Harbor. Music starts at 7:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. Tickets are $30 via snugjazz.com.
