This has been a very busy Memorial Day holiday weekend from the standpoint of severe weather and shifts to the Eastern Seaboard. There is severe weather risk up and down the East Coast from Georgia and Alabama, northward through South & up North Carolina, Virginia, Maryland, Delaware New Jersey and all of New York State including New York City and Long Island. In fact all the major metro areas including Atlanta, Charlotte, Richmond, Washington DC, Baltimore, and Phildelphia lie in the risk zone.

The risk also includes elevated tornado risk covering virtually the same area. We also have a not so low 5 percent risk zone from Eastern Pennsylvania and Western New Jersey south to Eastern Virginia and Eastern North Carolina. Heavy rain and some localized flash flooding is possible in some of these thunderstorms along with strong winds of 50 mph or and the possibility of hail.

Intensifying low pressure is moving through the Central Great Lakes and into Eastern Canada, strengthening along the way. A strong cold front likes north south creating a very warm unstable air mass to the east of the cold front. This sets up the zone of severe storms.Radars show the area moving across the South and Southeast US this morning and models show more thunderstorms developing in the Appalachians and heading eastward, reaching coastal areas late this afternoon into tonight. The good news is that after today we see severe weather risk over the US diminishing for the week ahead especially in the Eastern US as a cooler mor stable weather pattern sets up
